STEP ONE
The tail end of the yarn is coming up over my thumb, then behind my index finger and, attached to the ball at that end, hanging down. I've secured both hanging ends in my palm, being held by my last 2 fingers. You can either put a slip knot on your RH ndl to start, or put your ndl behind the horizontal bar of yarn (from thumb to index) and pull forward. Then insert ndl from the front up under the first thumb strand...

STEP TWO
Go behind index finger's yarn and hook the yarn...
STEP THREE
Pull the hooked yarn down into the hole made by the thumb loops...
STEP FOUR
Flick yarn off your thumb and pull stitch snug. If you started with pulling the horizontal yarn forward, you will have made 2 sts. All future sts are made using steps 2-4.

STEP FOUR
and swoop back under the yarn coming from index finger.
STEP FIVE
Look at your thumb, there's 2 strands making a hole, swoop up under the center of the hole, and then go behind the yarn coming from index finger.
Flick yarn off thumb and pull snug = 1 purl st made.
Look at the reverse side of the stitch - it is knit!
